5 basics every home should have

Every home is different. Some are small and cosy. Some are large and spacious. And some have multiple storeys. There are so many different locations, styles and designs that you couldn’t list them all if you tried. There really is something out there to suit every person’s needs and lifestyle. Which is why you love your home so much, because it’s unique to you and your family.

But even though each home is different and has its own unique set of qualities, that doesn’t mean there aren’t basics every home should have. There are some things that all people will need or want at some point during their stay in a house. And here are five of them.

An emergency kit

Have you ever cut yourself and not been able to find a plaster? It’s not a great experience. You either have to hold the wound with a cloth or tape some cotton wool on the area. It’s not practical and it’s not comfortable. An emergency kit is non-negotiable because you will need it at some point. You can’t go forever without a minor injury, headache or insect bite.

A torch or battery-operated lamp

You don’t have to be scared of the dark to need one of these. All you need is to unexpectedly run out of electricity or have the power trip. You don’t want to be feeling your way around the house, trying to figure out what the problem is with only your cellphone light to guide you. You want something with a strong light that will make it easy for you to see what you’re doing.

A junk drawer

Where do you put spare batteries, masking tape, unused adaptors and all the other items you don’t need right now but may want to make use of in the future? The stuff you don’t want to throw away but you also don’t want to have lying around in plain sight. You know, the things that don’t really fit in anywhere else in your home? Those items that can’t be categorised and don’t have a specified space in which to be stored. Well, that’s where the junk drawer comes in to save the day. This is a drawer, usually in the kitchen or garage, that’s sole purpose is to house these random objects.

A piece of art that makes you happy

A house is meant to be functional. It’s there to keep you safe, dry and sheltered. But a home, on the other hand, is meant to make you happy. It’s your sanctuary, where you go to relax, unwind and be in your own company. Which is why your home should be pleasing to the eye as well as a roof over your head. It doesn’t have to look like something out of the pages of a magazine, but it should represent your taste and personality. That’s why you should own at least one piece of art that makes you smile. It doesn’t have to expensive or done by a professional, it could simply be a painting by your child or a framed photograph of a memorable vacation.
